Henry is tired of being the middleman between his wife and her estranged parents. After fifteen years, he finally puts his foot down and asks for the actual reason for their breakdown. But when he discovers the truth \u2014 everything changes.<\/p>\n

I understand complex family dynamics. I know that issues rise to the surface, fester, and create something ugly. When my wife, Candace, disowned her family, I had no choice but to support her.<\/p>\n

Except that it\u2019s been fifteen years, and she hasn\u2019t said a word to them. And she won\u2019t tell me why.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said that I can\u2019t go to Grandma\u2019s house,\u201d our son, Lucas, told me. \u201cGrandpa is helping me with an assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had gotten so used to this \u2014 Candace always saying no, while Lucas just wanted to be with his grandparents \u2014 who doted on him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll handle it,\u201d I said to him.<\/p>\n

I took Lucas to his grandparents and then returned home to find Candace making waffles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want you to take him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour parents love Lucas. I don\u2019t see why he shouldn\u2019t spend time with them. You have a problem with them, but that doesn\u2019t mean he should.\u201d<\/p>\n

Candace looked at me with her big blue eyes and blinked slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey mean nothing to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t understand what had gone wrong. When Candace was pregnant with Lucas, her parents were always at our house. Her mother cooked everything she could dream of, and her father did whatever she asked.<\/p>\n

They were inseparable and had even moved in with us for the week leading up to Lucas\u2019s due date. But then Candace gave birth, and everything changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCandace,\u201d I said, watching her dig into her waffles. \u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued to chew, avoiding eye contact.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me, or I\u2019m going to file for divorce. I can\u2019t live a life based on lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

She dropped her fork to the counter and marched out of the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want the truth, Henry?\u201d she said as she walked. \u201cHere\u2019s the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went into our study and pulled out a thick file stuffed between old encyclopedias \u2014 the collection that her father bought on request.<\/p>\n

She tossed the file to me and walked out.<\/p>\n

I stood there, hunched over my desk, paging through a labyrinth of documents, medical records, and a handwritten note.<\/p>\n
