Emily nodded. \u201cI have. And I swear, I\u2019ll never take you for granted again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know you won\u2019t,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019ve learned a valuable lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral, actually,\u201d Emily laughed. \u201cNever trust a guy with a too-perfect smile, always read the fine print, and grandmas know best.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously, though,\u201d Emily continued, \u201cI can\u2019t believe how blind I was. Tom seemed so perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s often how con artists operate,\u201d I explained. \u201cThey tell you exactly what you want to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily sighed. \u201cI just feel so stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cYou\u2019re not the first to fall for someone like that, and you won\u2019t be the last. What matters is how you handle it afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded. \u201cI guess. It\u2019s just\u2026 I had all these dreams, you know? A big wedding, a perfect life. Now I\u2019m working two jobs and taking night classes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you\u2019re all the stronger for it,\u201d I pointed out. \u201cYou\u2019re building a real future now, not a fantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily smiled. \u201cYou\u2019re right. It\u2019s hard, but it feels good. Like I\u2019m actually accomplishing something.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are,\u201d I assured her. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of you, Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n
As we watched the sun dip below the horizon, I felt a sense of peace come over me. We\u2019d been through hell and back, but our bond was stronger than ever. Sometimes, tough love is exactly what\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n
Emily leaned her head on my shoulder. \u201cI love you, Grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you too, sweetie,\u201d I replied, wrapping an arm around her.<\/p>\n
