The fashion diva, widely referred to as the \u201cQueen of the Dark,\u201d laughed back and dismissed his remarks as she embraced her stunning beauty.<\/p>\n

Nyakim Gatwech believed that living in America would \u201cbe like heaven\u201d after having spent her formative years in camps for refugees in Ethiopia and Kenya.<\/p>\n
However, Gatwech spent a lot of time by herself in Buffalo when she arrived there at the age of 14, sobbing over people\u2019s opinions of her highly pigmented complexion.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t take showers. That\u2019s why your skin is dirt.\u201d Or, \u201cSmile so we can see you, Nyakim. We can\u2019t see you.\u201d Because of this, your skin is filthy. Or, Nyakim, smile so we can see you. You are invisible to us.<\/p>\n

For instance, the teacher might pose a question in class and remark, \u201cOh, Nyakim, can you answer that?\u2019\u201d How about \u201cWho are you talking to?\u201d from a child? She is invisible to us. She isn\u2019t present. The now 31-year-old lady tells Cosmopolitan, \u201cI would just cry, and the whole class would start laughing.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continues by describing her encounter with the Uber driver, saying, \u201c[SIC] I was asking my Uber driver the other day, and he said, don\u2019t take this personally, but would you bleach your skin for ten thousand dollars? I laughed so hard I was unable to even answer.\u201d Then he said, \u201cSo that\u2019s a no,\u201d and I was like, \u201cHell to the f*king yeah, that\u2019s a no, why would I ever bleach this gorgeous melanin that God bless with me?\u201d Then he said, \u201cSo you see it as a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her supporters rushed to Gatwech\u2019s defense, praising her immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess he did not get the memo\u2026black is beautiful,\u201d writes one fan.\u201cI cherish you for cherishing me,\u201d another says. \u201cWhy would we ever want to mess up something so beautiful?\u201d asks a third.<\/p>\n
When asked by Yahoo Beauty what advice she can offer young black girls who are facing similar obstacles, she said, \u201cYou are beautiful, you are unique, and there are people who love you just the way you are. They say that the darker the cherry, the sweeter the juice. Embrace your darkness!\u201d<\/p>\n
